MINDLESS car vandals are causing extensive damage to vehicles across West Lancashire.

Elderly, disabled and vulnerable car owners in Ormskirk are having their tyres slashed on a regular basis.

The cars are parked outside sheltered accommodation, and the residents say they have not upset or fallen out with anyone.

A spokesperson for Ormskirk and Burscough Police confirmed they attended an address in Westhead last Thursday to a man who reported five tyres being intentionally burst with what he believes to have been a dart or similar tool.

The man said: “I’m disabled and this is my only means of getting to work.

“I can’t afford new tyres every week.

“It’s happened to most of my neighbours, too, including ladies.”

PC1560 Ginn said: “We have taken emergency action to protect the community which will hopefully lead to an offender being caught if their actions continue. This person is targeting obviously vulnerable members of the community for no reason.”

And, in parts of Skelmersdale, police officers are urging motorists to be vigilant after cars were damaged in another spate of vandalism.

Skelmersdale PSCO Stuart Leng said: “We have received a number of calls from residents in the Colinton, Cornbrook and Ormskirk Road areas of Digmoor, reporting they had woken up to discover paint had been poured all over their cars overnight.”

Officers were out and about in the areas on Thursday last week, conducting CCTV and house-to-house enquiries.

If anyone has any information about who may be responsible for either of these incidents, please call police on non-emergency contact number 101.

Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111. No personal details will be taken and you will not have to go to court.
