How Charlie’s dedication raised funds for his heroes

-

ASMALL Primary School pupil Charlie Hall has been helping his heroes in the armed forces by raising more than £230 for his favourite charity.

The Year 6 student, whose uncle is in the army, approached headteacher Michelle Speak in the autumn term to ask if he could do something to raise money for the charity, Help for Heroes. His idea was to organise an afternoon tea fundraiser for parents and carers.

With the help of staff at the school, Charlie contacted Help for Heroes and spoke with them on the phone to tell them what he wanted to do. Over the next two terms, he made his plans and organised his fellow classmates to set up and run the event in the summer.

They all baked cakes at home and then helped Charlie to make sandwiches on the day, after he had been shopping for the ingredients. The final year pupils also helped make labels for the cake sale, organised a ‘Name the Teddy’ competition and asked their teachers to help run a raffle and serve hot drinks.

With classical music playing in the background, Charlie and his team served afternoon tea to over 40 people and raised a grand total of £232 on the day. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended, prompting comments from the guests, such as “What a great idea!”, “We absolutely loved the afternoon tea” and “A joyous event – your fundraiser was a triumph!”

Headteacher Michelle Speak added: “Everyone at Asmall is incredibly proud of Charlie and the huge effort he has put into organising this event since September. It was all his idea and he has worked really hard to make sure that everything went well on the day.

“We’re delighted that so many people came along and that he has managed to raise so much money for a good cause. Well done Charlie!”
