Ormskirk Advertiser

With Cllr Liz Savage

-

AUGUST is always quite a slow month for Mayoral duties in comparison with June and July, so I thought I would take the opportunity to tell you a little more about each of my charities.

As you probably know I’ve chosen four very local charities this year: The Birchwood Centre, The Artz Centre, Ormskirk Neo-Natal Unit and The Civic. If you would like to donate to any of the Mayoral charities, please send a cheque made payable to the Mayoress’ charities, to Ann England, council offices, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk. Cheques will be split across the four charities unless you specifically state that you would like your money to go to a particular charity.

This week I thought I’d focus on The Birchwood Centre in Birch Green in Skelmersdale. The aim of the centre is to prevent and reduce homelessness for young people aged between 16-25. To achieve this objective they work with young people who are aged between 13-25.

The Birchwood Centre is a small independent charity which provides a wide range of services. This includes intervention activities in the community to help prevent homelessness as well as mediation and counselling where required. It also provides supported accommodation for up to 24 months depending on what help is needed.

The centre also provides help with basic life skills such as cooking and budgeting and gives advice and information regarding homelessness issues. It also supports young people with training, education and gaining employment.

I’ve met some of the young people fortunate enough to be helped by the Birchwood Centre, who told me that they didn’t know where they’d be without the help and support of the centre. MAYORAL Fundraising Events
