MOTORISTS are being urged not to leave animals locked inside cars on hot days after a dog was rescued from a vehicle in Ormskirk.

Ormskirk and Burscough Police issued the warning after being called out to check on the animal’s condition.

Temperatures in the town reached as high as 23C on Monday, and were expected to rise even higher.

The Met Office has forecast that the UK could see the hottest autumn day for 67 years this week, leading to concerns that animals are well looked after as the sun shines.

An Ormskirk and Burscough police spokesman said on Monday: “This dog was rescued today. He was locked in a vehicle and left unattended for over an hour without water and an open window.

“Luckily a member of the public contacted the owner of the car and retrieved the keys before we would have had to break the window. The dog was given water and well looked after until the owner returned.

“Please be responsible for your pets and make sure they are safe in the summer heat.”

Some animal lovers are calling for more action to be taken against the dog’s owner.

Posting on the force’s Facebook page, Annaly Percival said: “And you gave the dog back to the owner?! They should be prosecuted for animal cruelty and the dog taken to a better home.”

If you spot an animal locked in a car and looking distressed, phone police on 101.
