Point gives us good platform

DAVID Powell’s side recorded a positive draw against Clitheroe on Tuesday evening after suffering disappointment in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Burscough were defeated 2-0 by Handsworth Parramore at the weekend but Powell was pleased with his side’s work ethic as they bounced back to record a good draw in the league.

They’re still searching for their first league victory but Burscough have shown improvement in recent performances and Powell hopes they can build on it going forward.

“I was very pleased with the performance. They were a good side and we went in with a game plan and executed it well,” said Powell.

“It was a battling performance and the draw was a fair result I think.

“We had a few half chances and maybe could’ve nicked the game but it was a good point.

“After the loss on Saturday the lads battled really well, worked hard for each other and you could see they’re starting to gain belief and confidence.”

Powell admitted he set-up his team to nullify Clitheroe’s threats by playing ‘their own game’ and that might’ve factored for the draw.

“We researched Clitheroe well before the game and recognised they liked to play with a back five and enjoyed success on the counter-attack.

“We played their own game and nullified their threat. That’s probably why it was a 0-0 draw in the end! It wasn’t too action packed because of it.

“Paul Smith got a red card at the end after coming on as a substitute and that was a bt disappointing,” he added.

“It was a very bad tackle and it was clearly dangerous. That was the only negative really so we didn’t dwell on it. The lads all worked really hard.”

Burscough take on Farsley Celtic on Saturday in the league and Powell says his side can be a lot more positive.

“We played really well on Saturday despite the loss and found there’s great experience within the team.

“The lads put them on the back foot at times and then we got a good draw against Clitheroe so we can hopefully go there and do the same again.

“We can be a bit more positive against Farsley and if we go there and stick to our game plan we should be able to get a result.

“There’s a few players who have been playing through pain barriers and we’ve got a few knocks from this week too.

“Liam Hollett has effectively been playing on one leg but has been doing well.

“Dave Ryan returned for us on Tuesday so that was a big plus.

“Paul Smith will be out through suspension and there’s a few other lads unavailable due to work commitments so we’ll assess our options at training on Thursday and go from there.”
