School’s £3,000 thanks to Alder Hey hospital
BURSCOUGH Priory has raised an £3,000 for Alder Hey after two students were admitted and treated at the hospital.
Year 10 student Kai Johnstone was riding his bike along Heaton’s Bridge, on Dam Wood Lane in Scarisbrick , when he was involved in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Corsa.
He was taken to Alder Hey, where he was treated for serious head injuries.
He has since been released from hospital but is suffering hearing loss as a result of his accident.
Georgia Addy, 15, was injured when she was hit by a van in Moss Lane in Burscough on her way home from school.
It has been five weeks since the accident and she remains in hospital.
The school had set itself a target of £1,000 through a number of activities including a concert night of performances from local talent and students.
The fundraising day started with all students paying £1 for a non-uniform day and continued with a cake sale and a grand raffle.
Prizes for the raffle came from the generous community of Burscough.
In the evening students, Burscough Priory staff, former students and local band The Late Poets gave a concert to a sell-out audience of more than 250 parents, students, friends of the school and staff from Alder Hey.
There were performances from Kai and Georgia’s friends and fellow students and messages were read out from Kai and Georgia’s parents.
The vicar of Burscough, Simon Glynn talked to the audience and students read prayers.
One highlight of the evening was a series of surprise “get well” video messages from famous personalities including Gary Barlow, Everton player Leighton Baines, Coronation Street stars, St Helens and England rugby player Matty Smith, Julian Norton – star of channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet – X Factor finalists and contestants from The Apprentice.
A copy of the video messages has been posted on Facebook and has since gone viral, with more than 18,000 views.
