Pervert jailed over historic abuse of girl
AWEST Lancashire man who repeatedly sexually assaulted a young girl 30 years ago has been jailed for 10 years.
Malcolm Flynn was given a three-year extended licence in addtition to the jail term after being convicted of eight sex offences involving indecent assault or indecency with the schoolgirl.
The 56-year-old was summoned to Liverpool Crown Court on November 11 and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was also imposed.
Flynn, of Holly Close, Westhead, near Ormskirk, denied the allegations when he was interviewed by police.
Robert Dudley, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court that the offences happened on various occasions. The girl confided in an uncle when she was 17 and he wanted to confront Flynn but she begged him not to as she feared he would attack Flynn and she did not want her uncle to get into trouble.
She later told other relatives but it was only in early 2015 that she went to the police to complain.
Jailing Flynn, Judge Norman Wright pointed out that nowadays some of the offences Flynn had been convicted of would be charged as rape.
The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, read a moving impact statement to the court in which she told how the abuse had affected her whole life and left her suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and anxiety attacks.
She said: “I feel dirty and frightened and it has ruined my life. Most of the time I don’t want to be here and sometimes I think that everyone would be better off without me.”
Det Con Karen Lambe, of Skelmersdale CID, said: “The vile offences that he inflicted upon this woman as a child are truly abhorrent and the sentence he has received accurately reflects the depravity of this contemptible individual.
“I would like to thank the victim in this case for her bravery and dignity from the moment she found the courage to inform the authorities about the acts she had been subjected to.
“As always the Lancashire Constabulary is committed to working with partners and victims to protect the most vulnerable people in our society and to bring offenders to justice.”
