We did well to beat full timers

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United grabbed a close victory on Saturday against Ilkeston, giving the side a huge boost.

They defeated Ilkeston 2-1 and recorded three points which was desperately needed.

Skem have struggled in the league this season and have been unfortunate on a number of occasions but Saturday’s victory signified the result of a number of changes from the manager.

Tommy Lawson has introduced some new faces to the squad in the last few weeks and he was pleased with their performances on the weekend.

“We had four players making their debut on Saturday as we wanted to introduce competition for places. Paul Foy, Chad Whyte, Dylan Smith and Michael Grogan all did really well and we also had Jason Jefferies on the bench,” said Lawson.

“It was a hard-working display. Ilkeston are a full-time team and they train all day every day so have the benefits of that.

“You have to do well to beat them but the new lads made an impact. Chad got the assist and Michael scored on his debut so that was great.

“There was a feel good factor after the game,” he added.

It was Skem’s first victory in seven games after they lost six successive league matches in a row but they are still struggling near the bottom of the table.

Lawson wants his side to remain positive though and with a number of new additions, he hopes his side can start again on Saturday against Halesowen Town. “We’re unbeaten in one,” said Lawson. “That’s the way you have to look at it. The atmosphere after the game on Saturday was of satisfaction.

“Everyone knew they’d done well individually and collectively. Even the new lads were complimentary of the team and didn’t think it looked like a struggling side.
