Don’t miss this slice of Burscough memories
APICTORIAL history of Burscough and its neighbours will be going on show next month. Michael Dawson, Lawrence Critchley and Debra Baldwin will be holding an Images of Burscough and Surrounding Areas exhibition in the main hall of the Stanley Club in Burscough on Saturday, December 3, 10am–4pm. David Lavery, grandson of Isaac Herbert Lavery the founder of Lavery’s cake bakery, which once employed up to 2,000 people in its Red Cat Lane factory in Burscough, will be opening the exhibition.
There will be more than 480 old images of the area including Ormskirk, Scarisbrick, Lathom, Rufford and Newburgh, with many items of local memorabilia on display, including items from HMS Ringtail.
To fit in with the Lavery’s theme there will be free samples of Burscough lemon slab cake, a variation of the slab cake that was once made at the bakery.
There will also be Ormskirk gingerbread and shortbread from an old recipe by Emma Vickers to try.
Richard Houghton from the Lathom & Burscough Military Heritage Society, Ormskirk and District Family History Society and Burscough Heritage Group will also be there, with various displays and information. There will be a raffle and items for sale – calendars, Christmas cards, fridge magnets, mounted prints and more – all with a local theme.
Twenty-six information sheets have been produced on various local subjects – including the recipes to the samples available on the day – that are free for people to take home.
A large screen on the stage will be showing many old local cine films including one from Lavery’s in the 1950s.
If you have any old photos of the local area that may be of interest, take them along on the day as the organisers will have their laptop and scanner available to make copies.
Check out the three Facebook groups by searching “Images of Burscough and Surrounding Areas” or the website, www.images-of-burscough.co.uk for 1,000s of local images.
