Derby day special on the table
WITH quarter final places in the Anon Cup up for grabs, the only surprise of the round occurred before a ball was even served, Crosby B withdrawing from their home tie against Waddington C due to player unavailability.
So with the holders out, Waddington C were the first to progress and join Argyle D who had a bye.
Crosby A overcame Waddington B quite comfortably, only Ged Wilson threatened the home side’s clean sweep taking Yameen Al Dahiri to a deciding game in an enthralling attacking encounter which see-sawed throughout, 13-11, 9-11, 11-3,5-11, 11-7 it finished, Crosby winning 6-0. Argyle B faired a little better against Crosby C, getting just the one point in a 1-6 loss, Monica Coogan with the win.
It was one way traffic at Third Division Southport C, where Argyle A from the First were just too strong, completing the inevitable maximum win.
Chris Foley for Second Division Waddington D was the only thorn in First Division Holy Trinity A’s side, winning the first game of the evening in the fifth against home captain Brian Crolley.
Away captain Frank Proffitt nearly improved the scoreline missing out narrowly in a five game tussle with Graham Oates. There was a similar story in the all First Division clash between Southport A and Waddington A. Wins for Miro Veliky and Bernhard Frank had kept Southport in it until a Gordon Wood win dealt the decisive blow making the score 2-6.
Finally Third Division leaders Argyle G were well beaten by a strong Holy Trinity C team.
Only doubles pairing Krzysztof Gorny and Ilona Kuznik managed to break the Trinity stranglehold, resulting in a 1-6 away win.
Of the eight teams in the quarters six are from Division One, with two from Division Two, and with an even split of two teams a piece from Argyle, Crosby, Holy Trinity and Waddington, wonder what the odds would be for four ‘derby’ matches.
