Loss of impact players proved costly - Powell

- BY EMMA SANDERS

BURSCOUGH weren’t able to carry momentum through from their victory against Tadcaster earlier this month, suffering their third successive league defeat on Saturday.

David Powell’s side were defeated 3-0 by Colwyn Bay after being struck with a number of key injuries.

Liam Davies, Dean Shacklock, Elliot Nevitt and Mason Nevitt were all absent as Burscough were unable to mount much attacking threat.

“Injuries were unhelpful. We had four lads out who play in advanced positions. They are all impact players who would have made a difference in the team,” said Powell.

“Our striker had a knock too and carried that through so struggled a little bit. We were light-weight up front.

“We just move onto Saturday now and hopefully we’ll have the injured bodies back.

“I’m looking to re-introduce most of them in training on Thursday – a few days’ rest might make the difference.

“Liam Davies will still be another few weeks off though as his injury is a lot more serious but Dean [Shacklock] will be back and the Nevitt brothers too.”

Powell admitted the lack of opportunities for his side in attack made the game difficult for Burscough and they were undone in the end despite the teams being fairly level throughout.

“A wonder strike from their team opened the scoring. I’m disappointed with the second one as we went to sleep at the back,” said Powell.

“Something we certainly need to address is our concentration levels. The lads worked hard but we need to work on it.

“We were pushing to try and get into the game when they scored the final goal late on too and it was another lack of concentration.

“It wasn’t really a 3-0 score-line though. That flattered them.

“We had a few chances and so did they. It was a pretty close game. We’re just disappointed to lose mainly due to our absentees.

“Saturday was a blip but the overall track is improving with new signings and more competition for places and we remain confident we can keep pushing on,” he added.

There were encouraging signs for Burscough despite their loss.

“They introduced new signing Adam Mosey from the bench and the attacking midfielder had a bright 25-minute spell.

Powell also revealed he has brought in Ben Collins, who he worked with as a youth player during his time at Warrington, and a new defender.

Burscough will hope to use their new signings in Saturday’s fixture against Kendal Town where Powell’s side are in desperate need of a league victory. We brought in Adam Mosey who is a former Southampton youth academy player. He most recently played for Morecambe’s under-23s.

“He’s a player who was recommended to me so we signed him and gave him a run out on Saturday and he did very well off the bench for the last 25 minutes as an attacking option.

“Ben Collins was a youth player with me at Warrington. He is more threat up-front again.

“We are also signing a defender from Prescot Cables who has got some more experience to bring to the back four. All three of them will improve the overall squad. I won’t stop trying to improve the squad”.
