Residents and businesses can find out up-to-the-minute information if there are changes to borough council services due to adverse weather conditions.
Signing up to Twitter is free and can be done at www.twitter. com.
The ‘blue light’ Emergency Services also use Twitter to give out urgent information.
If you visit www.westlancs.gov. uk/winter or follow us on Twitter you will be the first to know if there are any changes to services, including refuse and recycling collections.
The council is also urging residents to be prepared for floods, and to check if they need to take steps to protect their homes.
The storms last winter, in particular Storm Eva on Boxing Day, had devastating effects.
It caused the worst flooding ever recorded in West Lancashire and almost 300 properties were flooded internally.
Many people had to leave their homes because of the damage.
Information to help residents decide if they should take steps to protect their property is provided on the council website.
