FROM the Chelford Review, w/c DECEMBER 5 CATTLE Continenta­l cows sold to 141p/ kg for a gentleman farmer from south Cheshire, a similar fleshy type from Ian Booth making 135p/kg. Some great black and whites forward, 117p/kg for David and Janet Peacock grossing a healthy £990.08 in the lump. POULTRY Turkey and geese were the highest prices with 28ib bronze turkeys £21 (all prices per head) 24ib bronze turkey £17, 17ib bronze turkeys £13. White hen turkeys six in total sold for £10, a goose and gander for £10 and a pair of call ducks also sold for £10. Fresh bidding on cockerels saw some high prices, selling up to £12. PIGS Porkers average £120.31, cutters average £132.92, baconers average £121.86, overweight average £100.48 SHEEP Plenty of ewes and rams, with a great increase in trade ewes averaging £65.22. Top price ewes up to £115, Top price rams to £100. A good demand for these ewes. EGGS Free range £1.40, free range medium £1.10, extra large £1.30, medium 90p, small 50p, duck £.20, quail £1.10 POTATOES An improved trade this week with a total clearance. Wilja £5.50, Harmony 12.5kg £3.50, Nadine £5, Mozart £5.50, Accord £4.50, Piper £4. FRUIT & VEG Rope onions £2, dirty parsnips £3.75, dirty carrots £3.75, gold beetroot £2.25, red onions £3.25, beetroot £2.50, onions x 10kg £3.50, marrow 60p, bunched carrots 60p, leeks x 7lb £4.25, washed carrots £3.50, cauliflowe­r x 8 £9.50, savoy x 8 £2.50, sprout stems x 9 £7.50, kale £3.25, swede £5.25, red cabbage x 6 £4, mixed cabbage x 6 £3. PRODUCE A 10-tonne load of first quality big bale hay made a seasonal record price of £135 per tonne. Second quality big bale hay £66 to £68 per tonne. Similarly, a marked difference between the good and the ordinary small bale hay with a top price of £165 per tonne. Barley straw is flavour of the month, particular­ly that in round bales. Big square bale barley straw £80 to £88 per tonne, round bale £80 to £90 per tonne. Big bale wheat straw £54 to £68 per tonne. Oat straw £52 to £58 per tonne.
