EDGE Hill University in Ormskirk has apologised to staff, students and visitors after a further series of power blackouts.

Visitors coming to The Arts Centre at Edge Hill on Friday were turned away as the show was the latest to be cancelled.

Electricity was switch off earlier this week as contractors worked to investigate what’s causing the ongoing problem.

At the time of the cancellation a university a spokesman said: “Edge Hill University appreciates the cooperation and understanding of students, staff, and visitors during the recent episodes of loss of power on campus.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

“We are working closely with the utility company to identify the cause of the issues. Work is being undertaken this afternoon as part of a temporary solution to prevent reoccurrence and as a precautionary measure an engineer will remain on site between 5pm-7pm to ensure a rapid response should there be further issues.

“As a precautionary measure and to minimise the loading on electrical circuits we will close down unnecessary demand and would be grateful if students and staff could minimise their demand between 5pm-7pm.

“Should further power loss occur, emergency lighting will be in operation in all halls of residence and students can either remain in halls or congregate in the Hub where hot drinks and food will be available.

“Back up generators are now in place to ensure electric doors continue to operate. Campus Support are available 24 hours a day should any issues continue and can be contacted on 01695 584227 (internal 4227) or via the MyFM portal for non-emergencies.

The news was met with dismay by some on campus.

Speaking on the university’s Facebook page, Helen Wildgoose said: “I also bet when it’s time to pay again in January the students don’t get compensation for the inconvenience of it all.

“Isn’t 5-7 when everyone has tea etc how can this be changed as three times now my daughter has waited 2-3 hours with no electric!”

In an update a spokesperson for Edge Hill told the Visiter that after recent blackouts, work has been carried out to fix the issues and students should not encounter anymore problems. “After a planned shutdown on Sunday morning, our utility providers have now identified and rectified their two faults that have caused issues.

“We have been advised that any further power loss is unlikely. The University would like to thank students and staff for their patience and support while the issue was resolved.”
