FROM the Chelford Review, w/c January 3, 2017 CATTLE Best clean topped at 240p/kg for a handy heifer from Messrs. Wilcock who also topped the steers at 220p along with a powerful heifer from Messrs. Hadfield, Rowter. Headages of £1,276 and £1,277 for Mark Hadfield’s heifers. £1,249 for Messrs. Wilcock’s steer. Bull trade very brisk, some great sorts on offer, Phil Brennand taking the “Top 5” with ease selling to 212,210 and 208p/ kg and twice over £1,300. Black and whites to 157p/kg from Mr P Wain, plenty of trade for everything. POULTRY Poultry gatherings suspended following avian flu case. A temporary suspension on gatherings of some species of birds applied from December 20, 2016. The ban applies to chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese but not pigeons or aviary birds. Therefore there will be no poultry sales at Chelford or Beeston until further notice. PIGS Cutter average £121.96, baconer average £117.05, overall average £120.21. SHEEP All butcher, wholesale and catering buyers in fine form from the off with more than 30 pens of quality lambs in excess of 200p/ kg reflecting once again how fortunate we are to see so many top quality lamb producers at Chelford each week. A lot of lambs grossing up to over £90 per head, to a top of £101.20 for Martin Shaw’s 46kg, with the Platt family taking top honours per kg at 234p (39.2kg), 232p (twice each for pen of 40.3kg) and Ken House also at 232p for his 40kg lambs. Top of Andrew Bennetts’ at 230p for 42kg. EGGS Free range large £1.60, free range medium £1.10, barn – medium £0.85, barn – small £0.50, 157 duck to £2.40, average £1.30. POTATOES Arcade £3.50, Nadine £3.00, Wilja £2.50, washed x 10kg £3.25. FRUIT & VEG Washed carrots £3.25, cauliflowe­r x 10 £5.50, dirty carrots £1.50, curly kale £2.50, bunch carrots £0.30, hard cabbage x 8 £4.00, leek £3.00, beetroot £1.50, swede £4.25, onion £3.00.
