FIVE people have been arrested as part of a high-profile police inquiry into a horrific attack on former Liverpool FC owner David Moores.

The 70-year-old suffered severe injuries when crowbar-wielding robbers burst into his home in West Lancashire and stole cash and valuables.

The Advertiser can reveal that five people have been questioned over the raid.

The gang broke into Mr Moores’s home, in Halsall, as he watched the Reds take on Man City on TV last March.

They stormed the property, demanding cash and jewellery, before attacking Mr Moores and locking him in a bathroom.

He was left with deep wounds to his ankles and extensive bruising in the attack, after which the balaclava-clad robbers made off with £7,000 in cash, mainly in £50 notes, and valuables, including a Richard Mille skull watch.

The Advertiser understands that in the 10 months since the incident, five people have been questioned by Lancashire police detectives. They are:

Three men, aged 30, 34, and 39, and all from Liverpool, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery. They are on police bail pending further inquiries.

A 38-year-old man from Widnes was arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice and is also on police bail.

A 29-year-old woman from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and money laundering. She has been released and is not subject to any charges.

The investigation led police to appeal on national TV.

CCTV from outside the property showed men climbing over fences, holding crowbars and making off with holdalls.

The offenders were described as white, and one spoke with a “North West accent”.

A second man spoke with an Eastern European accent, though police believe that he may have faked it in an attempt to mask an English one.
