HEROES from Sefton and West Lancashire were celebrated on Wednesday at an illustrious awards ceremony.

We were privileged to share the company of some amazing groups and individuals at our annual Your Heroes Awards at the Ramada Plaza in Southport.

The Mayor of West Lancashire, Cllr Liz Savage, was there to applaud all the recipients, while Sandgrounder DJ Neil Newton hosted the evening.

The event was once again sponsored by the ScottishPower Foundation. Stephen Stewart, director of SP Energy Networks and representing ScottishPower Foundation, presented the awards.

He said: “The ScottishPower Foundation is delighted to sponsor these awards which recognise the tireless work going on within the local community and during the evening we had the opportunity to hear some very moving and inspiring stories about the winners”.

Categories included School of the Year, Young Heroes, Sporting Heroes, Teams and Individuals.

Andrew Brown, editor of the Southport Visiter, the Advertiser Series and Visiter.co.uk said: “I never cease to be amazed by the people who are nominated for our Your Heroes Awards.

“We heard some very moving stories at the Ramada. We heard about acts of courage and acts of kindness.

“But everyone there shared one thing in common – putting others first and going above and beyond to make our local communities a better place for all.

“The Visiter and Advertiser have held our Your Heroes Awards for a number of years now, and they are what our newspapers and website are all about – celebrating great things local people do, and we are now looking forward to next year.

“If you know of anyone who deserves to be honoured, email: jayne.middlebrook@trinitymirror.com” INSPIRATIONAL Burscough blogger, Hannah Lyson, was the winner or winners at the Your Heroes Awards.

The 20-year-old inspired thousands by blogging about her fight with bowel cancer.

Sadly, she lost her battle on Saturday.

Last year Hannah, then 19, was ready to live her dream by moving to America to live and work at a summer camp for three months, as she began an exciting career in travel.

But her plans were suddenly cut short when she received the devastating news that she had bowel cancer.

A truly determined young woman, she changed what was to be her travel blog and set up a Facebook page – Hannah’s Bowel Cancer Journey – to share her experiences with others, to inspire other young people suffering from cancer, and to let them know they were not alone

Writing in the blog, she told her followers: “I have embarked on a completely different kind of adventure altogether, but an adventure nevertheless.

“I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say – because of you, I didn’t give up.”

Understandably, neither Hannah nor her family were able to be with us at the event last week, but her award was met with a standing ovation.

This year’s Hero of Heroes award could not have gone to a braver, more inspirational, person and our thoughts go out to Hannah’s family and friends at this time.
