We’re in trouble but I’m optimistic

- BY EMMA SANDERS

ALAN Rogers was unable to get a victory during his first match in charge of Skelmersdale United but there were plenty of positives.

The young players put in a great performance but were unable to gain a point as Whitby Town secured a close 1-0 victory.

Skem waved goodbye to Tommy Lawson who had been in charge for 11 years but Rogers hopes he can use his experiences from his playing days to turn things around for the club.

“He’s [Lawson] done a great job and been at the club for a long time but I’ve got some experience and contacts in football that will certainly help me,” said Rogers.

“It’s a challenge that doesn’t faze me, it excites me. He’s been a fantastic servant but results dictate your position at the club unfortunately.

“I’m here now to try and get a few wins.”

Despite Skem being bottom of the table and with a tight budget, Rogers was pleased by the performance on Saturday and he believes there are some exciting players for the future.

“We had a team of 17, 18, 19 year-olds and some of them were outstanding. I’m delighted with the performance and what I saw,” said Rogers.

“We signed quite a few on the Thursday night but a lot of them weren’t available through injury or because they were not yet eligible.

“It meant we were down to the bare bones. The two players I had on the bench were injured so I couldn’t even make a change.

“But I’m not one to make excuses and I was pleased with the young lads who played.

“We’re in a bit of trouble but if we put the work ethic and commitment in they showed on Saturday it’s looking good,” he added.

On Saturday Skelmersdale return to action when they take on Halesowen Town.
