Crushing low to a fantastic high

- BY EMMA SANDERS

BURSCOUGH bounced back from a terrible defeat on Saturday afternoon to record a hugely important victory on Tuesday evening.

The Linnets were thrashed 8-0 by Colne on the weekend and the players left the pitch feeling broken and down.

However, they picked themselves up to record a crucial 3-2 victory against Glossop North in the midweek fixture and displayed great character.

It was five games since their last victory and Burscough had lost four successive matches in a row going into Tuesday’s game.

The club’s media officer Ross Chandley admitted it has been a week of ups and downs but Tuesday’s victory certainly went some way in making up for Saturday’s heavy defeat.

“It’s been a bit of a mixed bag this week.

“The 8-0 loss against Colne at the weekend was nothing short of embarrassing,” said Chandley.

“I can only apologise to fans on behalf of the club. We clearly weren’t at the races that day and we needed to be.

“We were playing against a side who are competing for a play-off position and it just wasn’t good enough.

“However, to win 3-2 away to Glossop on Tuesday evening shows what this squad is capable of doing.

“The lads showed true grit, determination and character to win that game. Their confidence was obviously low from the weekend but you have to give them credit.

“They went one behind early on and heads could have easily dropped again but they didn’t and they got three vital points.

“We’ve had lots of support on social media after the game – even from opposition fans who were keen to praise our performance so that’s great.”

Burscough return to action on Saturday when they take on Prescot Cables in a fairly local match-up.

Time is running out for the Linnets to put some points on the board but Chandley hopes they can take some confidence from their comeback on Tuesday evening.

Manager Keith McCann is expecting to name a full-strength squad too as no injuries were suffered in the victory.

“Looking ahead, we have to take that into the weekend’s game against Prescot Cables as we need to get another victory.

“Every point is vital heading into the last leg of the season so we’ll be giving it everything to come away with all three.

“Keith McCann has no fresh injury concerns and Anthony Shinks is expected to feature despite not travelling with the squad last night.”
