CATTLE Stronger short-keep steers were generally in short supply, best a bunch of outlying Charolais crosses from Messrs Lomas with native breeds topping at £1100 for Mr & Mrs Bourne-Withey with the best of Peter Hillard’s bunch, a Simmental cross making £1090, and Angus Crosses from David Norbury to £1060. Suckler calves peaked at £840 for last Springs Angus Crosses from J Wild. Several pens of strong heifers around, however to £1150 for David Parry’s Limousin Cross, Hereford Crosses to £1040 for Mr & Mrs Bourne-Withey, and Blue Crosses to £1000 from Messrs Redfern. Best of the young bulls to £650 for Alan Buxton’s Bazadaise Crosses. PIGS Porkers average £83.29, cutters average £115.09, baconers average £114.86, overweight average £84.98 SHEEP Top Spot – new 230.0p/kg 43.2kg Charollais crosses - A & J Walton, Backford, Chester. top spot – old 260.0p 40.8kg Texel crosses – R & S Bailey, Rushton Spencer. The best quality small bale hay made up to £160 per tonne with second quality £48 to £94 per tonne.

The difference between first quality and second quality big bale hay was less noticeable today, with the best quality in the market £80 to £84 per tonne but still plenty of loads at £44 to £60 per tonne.
