Preston has that Seve style

- BY TIM JOHNSON

TALENTED teenage golfer Preston Diggle, a junior member at both West Lancs and Lee Park Golf Clubs, has been invited to represent Lancashire in the U14 County Golf Championships this summer.

The 13-year-old Childwall youngster, who attends SFX College, was delighted to receive the news of his selection.

“The tournaments start in June and I’m very excited,” he said.

“It’s great to make my mum and dad proud of me. I just want to play well and I’m practicing hard.”

The teenager, who plays off a handicap of 11 and reckons to drive the ball on average 210 yards off the tee, believes his iron shots are the strength of his game.

Although some good judges might say that it is his basic competitiveness that helps him most on the course.

He continued: “I think my best win to date came in the Bill Beaumont Pro Am when my coach, Chris Cowdrey, put together a team and we won the competition.

“I also won a First Division event at West Lancs and a number of junior events at the club. These days I play mostly against adults.

“My favourite golfer of all time is Seve Ballesteros. I’m not quite sure why.

“I think I saw a film once about his life and I just loved the way he played the game.”

In order to concentrate on golf, Preston has stopped playing football, where he was something of a star striker with the Kingsthorne and Woolton Athletic clubs – once scoring 35 goals in a season for the latter.

He will use the extra time to practice three times and play a round twice a week at Liverpool Golf Centre and his two clubs.
