Cold comfort for Helen as she secures GB place
HELEN Sahgal has been selected to represent Great Britain in this year’s World Duathlon Championships to be held in Penticon, British Columbia in August.
Her selection has come after a qualifying round held last weekend in Bedford in horrendous conditions.
With snow and sleet throughout the competition, conditions were so bad that 21 athletes had to be treated for hyperthermia.
A 5K race was followed by a 21K cycle before a 2.5K race to finish.
Despite being disorientated with the cold on the final run, Helen finished as 10th lady but second in her age category. This was sufficient to secure her selection.
The National Masterss Cross Country Championship was held at a wet and windy Wavertree with three LPS runners taking part.
Kevin Usher, fresh from his triumph in the Northern Championships at Doncaster earlier in the month, was always in contention.
However, he had to settle for fourth place (27.03) in the over 50 category while Sammy Rashid finished 10th (29.38).
Club captain Mark Wynne was eighth in the over 40 category (27.36)
The Sefton Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were held in glorious sunshine last Wednesday at Jubilee Wood in Maghull and three LPS youngsters competed.
James Read (Year 6B) was always in the leading group and was pleased with his bronze medal. In the girls’ race Abigail Slater was 17th, with Eve Hannaway finishing 11th in the year 5 girls’ race.
It was a long trek to Norwich to compete in this year’s English Schools Cross country Championships, for the four LPS youngsters selected to represent their county.
Dan Jones, representing Lancashire, was 166th in the senior boy’s race, with Joe Gordon, running for Merseyside, 208th.
At Inter Boys level, Adam Jones (120th) and Ross Harrison (192nd) were both part of the Lancashire team that finished 12th out of the 44 counties competing.
