Little lift for Linnets as Cables docked points

- BY EMMA SANDERS

BURSCOUGH were given a week off as Saturday’s game against Prescot Cables was postponed due to poor weather – but a points deduction for their scheduled opponents has opened up an unlikely safety net.

Cables, third from bottom and the lowest team outside the relegation places in the Evo-Stik First Division North, were punished for fielding an ineligble player.

This means Burscough are now eight points from safety and still facing an uphill battle to escape.

But followng their shock 3-2 win at Glossop North End last time out, they need to take that form into this Saturday’s home game with mid-table Kendal Town.

The club’s media officer Ross Chandley hopes they can follow on from where they left off.

“The players have had plenty of rest as the weekend’s game was postponed due to the weather so that has been helpful,” said Chandley.

“They will hopefully still have the victory against Glossop in their heads and that will give them some confidence going forward.

“I’ve mentioned before the attitude and the desire of the players and how strong it is so they will need to keep that going against Kendal.”

With a week off, Burscough had plenty they needed to work on in training but Chandley believes it’s their ruthlessness in attack which is lacking.

Burscough have struggled to score goals this season and have only managed three so far in March, while shipping in 16 in their own net.

It’s certainly something McCann needs to address and Chandley admitted it has been a focus of theirs in recent weeks.

“They need to start making their home games count too going into the final stretch of the season so that has to be an aim,” said Chandley.

“They also need to start becoming more clinical in the final third.

“They always create chances in games but don’t often finish them and it’s been the difference on several occasions.

“It’s something that they definitely need to work on.

“One man who will be looking to break into the starting line-up against Kendal is Lee Hughes. He came on as a substitute in the terrific away win against Glossop.

“He did really well and even managed to bag a goal which has certainly given the manager something to think about!

“There are no new injury concerns for McCann so all Burscough can do is continue to look for a way out of their relegation battle.”

Saturday’s postponed match at Prescot Cables has been re-arranged for Tuesday, April 4, 7.45pm kick off.
