D-day over waste fees
PEOPLE in West Lancashire are being invited to sign up for new green wheelie bin charges.
The service for the collection of green garden waste was previously free, until councillors voted in a new charge at their budget meeting earlier this year.
Those who wish to use West Lancashire Borough Council’s chargeable garden waste collection service from June 5 can sign up and pay from this week.
People who sign up before May 15 will be guaranteed no interruption to their service, which will continue as normal on a fortnightly basis.
The charges will apply from June 5.
It will cost £30 per year for one green bin to be emptied. Householders can also have additional green bins emptied at £25 each per year and additional bins can be purchased if needed.
The quickest and most convenient way to sign up and pay is via the website www.westlancs.gov.uk/ gardenwaste
People can choose whether or not to use the garden waste collection service after the free service ends on June 2. Those who decide not to sign up will still be able to dispose of garden waste at household waste recycling centres, or compost it. The council aims to deliver a leaflet to every household giving information about the changes. Information is also provided at www. westlancs.gov.uk/gardenwaste
Director of street scene services Heidi McDougall said: “Residents who sign up and pay can enjoy the benefits of using the service on a fortnightly basis, can help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill and contribute towards protecting the environment.”
