Celebrating a surreal centenary
EDGE Hill University is marking the centenary of celebrated surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011).
Prof Roger Shannon, who has a research interest in the surrealist painter - who lived in Mexico but grew up in Lancashire spoke at a prestigious panel event in Mexico City on April 6, ahead of a oneday symposium at the University which will take place on June 30.
He said: “As a university we are proud to celebrate the life and work of Leonora Carrington. We were heavily involved in an exhibition of her work at Tate Liverpool recently and have even named one of our campus buildings after her.”
He added: “The university will also celebrate the achievements of this most Lancastrian of Mexican surrealists at a symposium as part of our monthlong Festival of Ideas in June.”
The Leonora Carrington Centenary Symposium on June 30 will feature keynote speaker Dr Catriona McAra from Leeds College of Art and Joanna Moorhead, cousin of Leonora, will discuss her book, The Surreal Life Of Leonora Carrington.
The symposium will also screen two new films relating to the artist’s life and work.
