Hesketh up and running

- BY EMMA SANDERS

FLEETWOOD Hesketh got off to a winning start on Saturday as they picked up their first victory of the season against Hightown St Marys.

Tommy Wareing and his side had to fight until the end in a close encounter but Hesketh celebrated a win at the end.

There was just one wicket between the sides as Hesketh recorded 181-9 in 51 overs after Hightown had set a score of 180 all out.

Wareing was pleased his side were able to celebrate a win but he admitted there is work that needs to be down on their batting.

“We didn’t play too well actually. We were a little lucky,” said Wearing.

“They dropped eight or nine catches in the field so they gifted us several runs.

“We only won by one wicket so it was a close finish and it could have gone either way.

“I’m obviously pleased with the win but we’ll be looking to improve our performance next week.

“We bowled pretty well and fielded okay but we struggled a little in the later stages of the innings.

“We need to look at some of the shots we were playing with the bat though as we didn’t do well enough in that department.”

Hesketh return to action this weekend when they take on Highfield in Saturday’s 1st XI fixture.

Their opponents have also made a winning start to the season, picking up two victories in their first two games.

However, Wearing believes Hesketh’s home advantage will give them the edge and he hopes to see more of the same from this Saturday’s stand-out performers.

“They [Highfield] will be confident after winning their first two games,” said Wearing.

“I always think we’re strong at home. We’ll have the same squad this week too and I’m happy with everything in terms of the players we have available.

“Hopefully with our home advantage we can come away with maximum points but we will need to perform well.
