Brierley eyeing top three finish
NEWLY-PROMOTED Skelmersdale CC were up against it on Saturday when they took on Burscough.
Skem were unable to pick up a victory as Burscough took home the spoils but Martyn Brierley was encouraged by the performance of his team.
The captain admitted the standard of batting ‘let down’ his side but he was pleased with how Skelmersdale performed in the field.
“Our bowling was really good. We had some good spells,” said Brierley.
“To be honest, we probably dominated it bowling-wise. We got let down by our standard of batting really - myself included.
“We’re looking to change that on Saturday and improve with the bat so we can build a good score and put pressure on our opponents.”
Skelmersdale take on Orrell Red Triangle on Saturday and Brierley believes the addition of their overseas player might be able to make all the difference with the bat.
“We have a professional player coming over from India so hopefully he can give us a boost and we can improve,” said Brierley.
“You just can’t really tell much at this moment in time on how strong they are going to be because everybody is still getting going.
“It’s been a tough start to the season. Everyone is just trying to get settled into the league and that includes us.”
Brierley knows it will be a long season for Skelmersdale but despite only gaining promotion last season, he hopes his side can compete strongly in the league.
The skipper has set his team a target of trying to break into the top three but Brierley admitted Skem’s safety is the ultimate goal this season.
“We want to try and progress and challenge the top three ultimately but obviously our main aim is to just make ourselves become comfortable with a place in Division one,” said Brierley.
