Police in warning over bank scammers

-

PEOPLE are being warned not to fall for a scam where criminals call up to claim that their victim’s bank has been hacked.

Police say they have had “a number of incidents” where callers have tried to trick people by saying that they need their bank details in order to protect their money.

A spokesman for Skelmersdale police said: “We have recently had a number of incidents relating to online and telephone scams.

“Scammers have been calling members of the public stating to work for banks and telephone or internet providers.

“These scammers have then been stating that the customers’ banks have been hacked and they need their bank details to protect their money.

“Others have also requested that they allow them to take control of their computers/tablets so that they can protect their finances.

“Unfortunately, some people have lost large amounts of money due to these scams and so we urge the public to be vigilant.

“These scammers use many different avenues to try and take our hard earned money.

“Targets are usually the older and more vulnerable members of our communities, so let’s also offer them some support and advice where we can.”

Anyone with info about these crimes should call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
