Rowdy students ‘made lives hell’

-

AGROUP of students who are alleged to have made their neighbours’ lives hell in Ormskirk are facing eviction for their raucous late-night antics.

The students, who reportedly shouted and screamed into the early hours of the morning, led to neigbours making a total of 20 complaints to West Lancashire Borough Council over their behaviour.

The three students could now be facing eviction from their Alexandra Mews home.

This is because of a recommendation to refuse their landlord’s “house in multiple occupation” (HMO) licence, which allows him to rent the property to them.

A series of letters submitted to the council’s planning committee reveal the nightmare neighbours say they have had to endure.

One neighbour, Michael Reeder, said: “Since they moved in last September, my life has been total hell.

“The three girl students in the flat have no respect for any other residents.

“They constantly play music load and shout till all hours of the morning.

“I contacted the police early February at about 4.30am because I couldn’t take any more of their shouting and screaming.

“I have to work from early morning till the evening, and I can’t take any more anti-social behaviour from them.

“I am getting very upset and this is affecting my health and life.”

Another letter was submitted by a neighbour whose bedroom faces the front of the student flat.

He said: “We have already fallen victim to the irresponsible and selfish behaviour of some students who already rent properties on the estate.

“Returning home, they exhibit raucous and drunken behaviour, whilst depositing rubbish and items – clearly collected on their journey back from town – in our front garden, a situation which I believe anyone would agree with, is totally unacceptable.

“Unfortunately, students are given to unusual and bizarre life patterns, and the majority of these incidents tend to occur in the early hours of the morning.”

The neighbour also complained that Wigan Road and Stanley Street have been left looking like “slums” thanks to careless students who don’t look after their homes.

Local resident A Dawes wrote to the council to say: “I appreciate that students need decent accommodation and that not all students are noisy and careless in their treatment of the environment, but bearing in mind the original purpose of this building was to provide a quite harmonious environment for residents, to introduce an HMO element would be quite unsuitable and restrictive for student occupants.”

A list of complaints submitted to the council includes noise disturbance, anti-social behaviour, littering, a lack of respect for the local area and the building being “unsuitable” for students.

The council’s planning committee will decide the outcome of the application tonight (Thursday).
