I feared for kids as car maniacs struck

AMUM was left fearing for her children’s safety after seeing cars speeding and swerving around Southport Beach.

Christine Peters, from West Lancashire, was visiting a friend in Southport with her eight-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son when she witnessed two cars driving dangerously on the sand.

According to Christine, two cars driven by men in their 20s caused havoc swerving in and out of parked cars and onto pedestrian paths.

The drivers would then return to two other cars and repeat what they were doing.

Christine, from Skelmersdale, says she will not return to the beach after enduring the terrifying ordeal.

She said: “We had gone to see a friend and walked down the car entrance because we were at that end.

“My girl has ADHD and that’s why we went to the beach, so there was a lot of space for her to run around safely.

“We were coming down the ramp with the pram and had to actually jump out of the way of the first car.

“The first car was swerving in and out of the cars, up the ramp, on the pedestrian path. Even I was scared, thinking ‘where do we go?’ It was like a competition for them all. They were taking turns to show what they could do.

“As they went off, we walked along the beach and between the van and the cars was another family who could have been hit.”

Christine, 31, says the situation was made worse by there being nobody present to stop the dangerous drivers. “I know nobody got hurt but they easily could have done. You could see the cars dipping when they were turning because they were going fast.

“The lifeguard was miles away, no-one was hurt yet so you can’t call it an emergency so what can you do?

“I won’t be going on the beach again. It was 4pm on a Saturday, there’s families on the beach, the pier’s rammed and there’s idiots doing that.”

Sefton Council said: “We want everyone to enjoy our many beaches in a relaxed and safe fashion, free from anti-social behaviour.

“In instances like this we would ask anyone concerned about other drivers on the beach to immediately report this to the police by calling 101.

“If our Rangers are present, we would ask people to report such incidents of anti-social behaviour to them as well.”
