Maghull in draw as Liverpool swop spot at the top

- BY PAUL EDWARDS

LIVERPOOL moved to the top of the Second Division table when they beat the previous leaders, Spring View, on Saturday but Matt Jackson’s cricketers were made to scrap for their two-wicket victory.

All had seemed under control at the midpoint of the game after Tom Moore’s 8-37 had dismissed the visitors for 127 in 50.4 overs, but Liverpool lost wickets regularly during their pursuit, one of them that of top-scorer Henry Charlton for 39, and they were eventually indebted to No10 batsman, Jackson Burns, for securing the points.

Wavertree are now third, although Josh Birch’s men were unable to force a win at Old Xaverians. Ian Carroll’s 82-ball 105 enabled the home side to post 195-8 declared in 42 overs but Tom Oughterson then made 51 as the visitors replied with 161-8 in 59 overs.

Northop Hall are also well in contention but they had by far the worst of their draw against Southport Trinity at the Rookery. Tony Campbell’s 82 helped Trinity to 196 all out in 52.4 overs and the Welsh side were 59-7 off 36 overs at the close.

There was a very tense finish at West Derby where Alder’s game against Maghull ended in a draw. The home side’s 146 all out boasted a fine 69 from Andrew Aitchison but the visitors managed 142-9 in 36 overs in reply. Paul Walters made 33 but Kamran Hussain’s 5-64 and Nazim Mohammed’s 4-58 just about kept the visiting batsmen in check.

St Helens Town enjoyed a very comfortable 45-run victory over Caldy at Ruskin Drive. Josh Davies made 59 in the home team’s 160-8 declared before Liam Gaskell took 5-28 and Phil Murgatroyd bagged 4-28 to seal the win.

The match between Prescot & Odyssey and Parkfield Liscard was abandoned without a ball bowled.
