Grogan has his cake and eats it with Eccles win
ECCLES Archery Club in Manchester held its annual double WA 720 archery competition at its grounds on Sunday.
Although a warm dry day, a blustery wind made shooting difficult for the archers who had to hit the targets at the fixed range of 70 metres.
The WA 720 round (previously known as a FITA 70) consists of shooting 72 arrows in groups of six at a time (known as ends) at the target placed at 70 metres (this is also the standard distance used for archers in the Olympics).
The archers then score and collect their arrows after each ‘end’ then repeat the process again until all 72 arrows (12 ends) have been shot.
The Eccles tournament holds a WA 720 in the morning, then another in the afternoon.
Skelmersdale archer Jack Grogan is a regular contestant at this popular annual competition and was hoping to continue with his success that he has had in winning every competition that he had entered for the outdoor season this year.
The tournament started and it wasn’t long before Grogan settled into his stride. Shooting strongly he was soon placed at the top of the leader board where he remained unchallenged for the rest of the morning session.
After a lunch break the second session began.
For Grogan, it was basically a repeat of the morning session as he dominated the score board unchallenged for the second time.
At the presentation ceremony Grogan collected the winning medals and the customary Eccles Cake which is awarded to winning archers.
