Pyatt smashes 25 year record in the discus

- BY WALLY BRIDSON

JENNY Pyatt won the U20 women’s discus at this year’s northern championships with a throw of 43.51m and in doing so shattered the championship record which had stood for 25 years

What better way to warm up for the English schools championships early next month.

Also, competing at Sports City was Emma Givens who won bronze in the senior women’s 100m hurdles (16.43m) and veteran Clare Constable continued her fine run of form with runs in the 400m (61.6) & 800m (2:21.52)

Heavy overnight rain had left plenty of surface water at Bebington Oval, the venue for this year’s Mersesyside schools championships. Entries were disappointing, no doubt put off by the weather forecast of rain all day.

From an LPS perspective it was Dave McComb’s high jump group who took the plaudits, winning all the age groups they competed in.

Inter Boys, Kai Finch (1.85m) & Owen Southern (1.70m) took first & second place with Kai securing selection for the Merseyside team to compete at next month’s English Schools Championships in Birmingham.

Sandy Clarkson (1.55m) won the junior boys event, while Imogen Ayres (1.50m) & Niamh Doyle (1.45m) made it a one-two in the junior girls event. Jorden Pilkington (1.40m) took gold in the IG & silver in the 80m hurdles (14.0).

Bill Steel’s javelin throw of 33.98m was his longest throw ever and he comfortably won the JB event, with Jessica Groves winning bronze in the girls’ equivalent (17.61).

At inter girls level, Alice Prescott won the triple jump (9.79m) and Erin Birchall took silver in the long jump (4.99m).

A determined finish over the last 50 metres secured a silver medal for Joe Houghton in the inter boys 800m (2:06.2)

LPS had two athletes competing in the Greater Manchester schools championships held at Stretford.

Billy Matthews (senior boy) won the bronze medal in the 400m (51.8) and Charlotte Mawdsley finished 5th (12:40.5) in the senior girls 3,000 metres.

At the Lancashire schools championships at Blackpool, Lauren Lewis was delighted with her winning jump of 4.30m in the inter girls age group.

This confirms her selection for Lancashire at the English schools event. Abigail Bamber was 4th in the final of the JG 100m with a time of 13.4 which was just short of her season’s best.

Lucy Le Marinel also narrowly missed out on a medal with her 4th place finish in the IG 100m final (14.3)

The latest event in the Merseyside Grand Prix was the 5 Mile race at Birkenhead Park on the Wirral.

Kirsty Longley won the women’s event by almost 3 minutes (29.11), with Victoria Gilbody finishing in 36.30.

In the men’s race, Mark Wynne was pleased with his 3rd place finish (26.50) while Danny Gilbody (32.27) was 43rd & Andrew Conway (35.06) was 67th.

Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton travelled to Burnley to contest their second fixture in the northern league and came away with a resounding victory, to consolidate their top position in the league.

Their points tally of 438 was 64 more than East Cheshire AC & contained 25 first place victories. Danny Higham won both the 100m (11.3) & 400m (48.9) events, with Billy Matthews victorious in the ‘B’ events (11.8 & 51.9), while Harry Doran won the 200m (23.2).

Lauren Lewis (12.70) and Emma Givens (13.4) made it a sprint double in the women’s 100 metres, while Lucy Townson (60.40) and Clare Constable (61.5) matched them in the 400m event.

Both athletes claimed a double victory with Lucy (71.9) winning the 400m hurdles event and Clare the 800m (2:19.5).

Youngsters Lauren Lewis (5.07m) and Alice Prescott (4..59m) secured maximum points in the long jump, as did Emma Givens (16.9) and Jorden Pilkington (19.4) in the 100m hurdles as did Kai Finch (1.85m) and Owen Southern (1.70m) in the high jump.

Jonathon Bride was the sole middle distance success in the men’s events winning the 800m (1:59.7)

In the throws, Gary Ireland secured maximum points in his four events, winning the hammer (34.76m), discus (30.91m), shot (11.08m) & ‘B’ javelin (38.59m).

There was able support from Mark Line (27.04m) in the hammer, Callum Hynd (29.64m) in the discus and Dave Brown (9.95m) in the shot, as they all won the ‘B’ events.

Not to be outdone, the women too had their share of victories in the throwing events.

Under-20 Jenny Pyatt won both discus (41.53m) & shot (9.85m), while Rachel Hutchinson’s shot putt of 8.23m and Lucy Wroblewski’s discus throw of 20.08m secured maximum points in the ‘B’ events.

Victory in the next match at Edge Hill should guarantee promotion back to division 2

Lisa Gawthorne doesn’t go anywhere without her running shoes. While on holiday in Vegas recently, she ran a 5K race near Red Rock canyon in Nevada.

With temperatures at 87 degrees when the race started at 7am, Lisa described it as ‘running in an oven’.

Not only was Lisa the first woman home but she managed to beat all the men as well. I am sure it was ideal warm weather training for her world duathlon race in Canada, later in the summer.
