The Mini Masters: Mighty oaks from little acorns grow
ON Monday, July 10, our most “Able & Ambitious” pupils took part in the Mini Masters Day where they were given the opportunity to attend sessions by teachers on their specialist subject.
The day began with talks from author Joanna Barnard, who gave a speech about the secrets of success, and how it doesn’t always go to plan, and musician Stewart Wood who discussed the complexity of musical therapy.
Multiple sessions were run throughout the day, one titled “How do you hear the world?” by Stewart.
He talked about how music could help people, and change the mood of others. He then listened to one of the students heartbeats and changed it into music, which was fascinating.
Teacher Mrs Roberts ran a Nature vs Nurture session, where we debated about whether intelligence was related to genetics, upbringing or a mixture of both.
During the session we discussed twin studies to figure out whether being brainy really was down to our genes or not, leading to a lot of controversy.
As well as this, a brilliant talk was held by our headteacher, Mr Kerridge.
He led a captivating session on the philosophy of Descartes’ Mediation: I think, therefore I Am.
The students discussed the theory of how our existence depends on our ability to think, and that as humans it is our function to think.
It was a very thought provoking session, and many of the students provided great philosophical viewpoints, particularly when they reviewed the concept of colour.
Mr Kerridge also added that you should never be bored in a lesson, because your thoughts can always entertain you!
Then there was the literacy treasure hunt session which focused on five different novels written by different authors.
All students participated in a game were they had to answer a number of questions about each novel by searching for the answers in the books, working in pairs to try and win the race; – something that got very competitive! Tyler Weston, Ormskirk School
