FROM the Beeston Review, w/e July 28 CATTLE Numbers are starting to dry up nationally: with the current level of demand through the auction system can you afford not to sell your cows live on their legs! Trade was as dear as they’ve been.

With an entry of 90-plus dairy-bred cattle straight from the parlour, to achieve a market average of 117.60p/kg or £713.60 just emphasises the trade seen at present.

Not the best of shows in terms of quality forward, however despite that there was only a handful of cattle present selling for less than 90p/kg. Today’s market average (all black and white), was coming in at 117.60 or £713.60 per head. Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 130p to 145p for meated cows (140p to 160p younger models), 120p to 130p for steakers, 105p to 120p for stronger plain cows and 80p to 100p thereafter. Bulls to 146p or £1,328. POULTRY Another excellent sale, with plenty of variety of stock. Quality stock fetched premium prices with a Buff Pekin Hen and six chicks at £26. Two turkey poults sold at £21 (all prices per head). A Gold Brahma cock £13. Six Rhode Island Red POL £12. 80 Amberlinks and Sussex Rangers sold up to £11. Ebdon geese unsexed 10 months old sold for £11, with another 30 booked in for next week. Three Aragon pullets, a trio of Lavender pullets and a broody hen and three pure New Hampshire chicks all sold for £10. PIGS A good trade yet again at Beeston with excellent quality pigs. Again they came from all over the UK. A good demand with plenty of pigs in, and plenty of buyers.

Sows selling to 74p/kg, boars to 49p, butchers’ pigs selling to 159p, stores £41, in pig sow to £280 SHEEP The smallest entry we’ve seen since the move to Beeston, following falling trade all week nationally. However several regular vendors together with a few selling their first draw were rewarded with an excellent trade throughout for quality lambs, all from 200p to 230p/kg. PRODUCE Only one load in – 24 big bales of hay sold to £30 per bale. Purchasers after small baled hay and straw went home disappointed.
