It’s just getting better and better for Burscough

- BY EMMA SANDERS

BURSCOUGH CC recorded a comfortable victory against local rivals Fleetwood Hesketh last Saturday to continue their strong form.

Jon Stone and his side have enjoyed success with the bat in particular during their last five matches and they were impressive again last weekend.

Poor form at the start of the season may have cost Burscough a place in the Liverpool & District Cricket Competition’s First Division promotion spots but they will give the teams in front a run for their money if current form continues.

Stone admitted his team felt “full of confidence” as they went into the field following another strong batting display.

“We won easily in the end so I’m very pleased with the team’s performance and how the game went,” he said.

“We batted first after losing the toss and we got over 200 on a bit of a rubbish wicket. Then we bowled them out 120.

“We went into the field full of confidence as we knew it wasn’t a great wicket.

“We knew we could bowl them out quickly and we’d performed well with the bat.

“There were some great performances, including Navdeep Aujla who got 94 with the bat, as well as Alan Murray who got 34 and Chris Andrews with 26.

“It was a really good performance all round but Benjamin Van Niekerk picked up six wickets with the ball in hand and was excellent too.”

With the season starting to draw to a close, Stone admitted promotion may be out of sight for Burscough but he hopes they can continue to play well and fight for as many points as possible.

“We have definitely picked up form in the last couple of weeks,” said Stone.

“We had a bit of a terrible start and now we can’t stop scoring runs – especially in the last five games.

“We have bowled well too. We’re playing like we should.

“Now we’re showing what we can really do, it’s just a shame we couldn’t do this earlier.

“Anything can happen in this league – we know that – but we’re a long way away from a promotion spot.”

Burscough return to action on Saturday when they entertain Wigan at School Lane and Stone has identified one player his side must deal with.

“Wigan will be a tough game. They’ve got some good players and their overseas player is very good,” said Stone.

“If we can get him out early that’d be really good for us and will be key to us winning the game, I think. We have a full strength squad again so if we can just get him out early then we stand a good chance of picking up a result.”

Saturday’s match has a 1pm start time.
