Talk on history of church
ANEW supermarket is due to open in Ormskirk. The Co-operative will be opening a store on Wigan Road, bringing a vacant site back in to use.
The shop will be on the site formerly belonging to the Ropers Arms pub, which was falling into disrepair.
The new store is expected to launch in late November, following a £500,000 investment on the site.
The opening will also create up to 16 jobs for local residents.
Among the things on offer instore will be a bakery, hot food and Costa coffee dispenser alongside a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas, wines and essentials.
It is hoped the opening will bring a funding boost for local good causes through its membership scheme – which allows members to receive a five per cent reward on the purchase of own-branded products and services, with a further one per cent benefiting good causes.
Groups in the area benefitting from the scheme include: Maghull Air Training Corp, Carla Lane Animals in Needs, Ormskirk Neonatal Unit, Southport Gymnastics Clubs and Formby Luncheon Club.
Dan Wood, area manager for the Co-op, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support the Wigan Road community. The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum.
“Our ambition is to establish the store as a local hub, a real asset for the community.
“We want shoppers to know that they can become a coowner and member of their Co-op. We are also giving back to the community.
“Our members can make a difference. By swiping their membership card when they shop with us they can raise funding for organisations in the area who contribute to improving local life.”
Chris Moss, acquisition manager for the Co-op, added: “The Co-op opened more than 100 new stores UK-wide last year, and has ambitions to open a similar amount this year and in subsequent years – we are always on the lookout for new sites where we can be at the heart of local community life.”
If members of the community are interested in finding out more about the roles available, they can call in to a nearby store or visit www.jobs.coop.co.uk/ business-areas/food/ BURSCOUGH Heritage Group’s September history meeting on the History and Development of St John the Baptist Church, Burscough, takes place on Monday, September 11.
The church was consecrated in 1832 and is now a Grade II listed building.
It was built with the aid of a government grant using funds from the Church Building Act 1818 and is thus known as one of the 600 “Waterloo” Churches.
The church now features a magnificent east window installed in 1920 as a memorial to the men of Burscough and Lathom who died in WWI.
David Orritt, from the church, will be presenting an illustrated talk on its place in village life.
Everyone is welcome to come along to The Blue Mallard on Burscough Wharf on Monday, September 11 for a 7.30pm start. Entrance £2 voluntary donation to the heritage group.
