FROM the Beeston Review, w/e September 1 CATTLE The dairy section had its fair share of plainer cattle with plenty of belly, however this didn’t affect the overall trade, with a market average for the dairy section 126.83ppk or £754.84, especially considerin­g this very sale 12 months ago saw averages of 95.59ppk or £603.14, Trade was pretty good. Trade flew away to 197ppk or £1,576 for a blue cows from distant travellers R Whitfield of St Helens. POULTRY Our first Bank Holiday sale at Beeston and what a sale it was, plenty of stock, over 800 head of poultry, great variety and prices that reflected the quality on offer. The day was about rabbits and ornamental waterfowl with a pair of ruddy Shell Ducks being sold for £56 (all prices per head). A pair of Mandarin Ducks Pioned £34. A Rex Buck Rabbit sold for £25, also Blue Teddy Doe and a Caramel and White Teddy Doe. Two large impressive Turkey stags sold for £40. A pair of Peafowl fetched £30. A pair of Silkies sold for £25. A Toulouse gander £24. Several cages of mixed pullets appealing to the retail buyers, sold for up to £10. Four POL Bluebells sold for £16. PIGS Porkers selling to 156ppk, Sows selling to 64ppk, Another flying week at Beeston with more pigs around. Also breeding pigs sold well. In pig gilts selling to £240, 10-12 month-old pietrain boar to £210. SHEEP Top Spot: 234.0p/kg 45.40kg Texel crosses – C F Fox Daisy Bank Farm, overall average: 188.23/ppk. Quality averages: premium max p/kg 234.0 – ave p/kg 194.72, prime max p/kg 220.0 – ave p/kg 188.81. FRUIT & VEG Another quality entry of vegetables fresh “from field to fork” saw potatoes to £4 per bag, leeks to £3 (5kg), Swede and red cabbage to £4.50, hard cabbage to £4.50 and cauliflowe­r to £5 (all per box). Local carrots are promised for next week. PRODUCE 100% clearance with a good trade. More loads are required. Quad Bale Barley Straw – £75 per tonne. Quad bale wheat straw - £70 per tonne. June 2017 quad bale hay - £28 per bale or £100 per tonne equivalent.
