Edge Hill Students’ Union launches Disability History Month

-

EDGE Hill Students’ Union launched ‘Disability History Month 2017’ on campus recently to raise awareness of the struggles disabled students face to achieve equality and human rights.

The theme of this year’s celebration is the “History of Disability and Art”, and the month sees a number of events taking place around the Campus.

Kathryn Pidcock, Disabled Students’ Officer at Edge Hill Students’ Union, explained: “I was five years old when I got diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Luckily for me, my parents helped me every day to strive further and beat any barriers set for me.

“By pushing myself, I have managed to attend university and am even studying for my Masters.

“At a time when our benefits are being slashed and disability hate crime is on the increase, we should be doing everything we can to stand in solidarity with all disabled people for a fair and just society.”

Edge Hill Students’ Union has partnered with organisations, including Edge Hill’s Sign Language Society, Edge Hill Sport, The Arts Centre and Edge Hill’s Library, to run activities to encourage students to think about disabled students’ struggles and ways in which we can all help to break down barriers.

These include sign language classes, films and literature showcases, dance workshops, speaker sessions and flashmobs.
