Glorious in mud for Tom

- BY WALLY BRIDSON

THERE was a record turnout of LPS athletes for the annual Cross Challenge event held in Liverpool’s Sefton Park.

This event gave all local youngsters the opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the four home countries.

Persistent rain during the week ensured the ground underfoot was extremely soft and the early races soon ensured this was converted into mud for the later races.

Winter sunshine was prominent for most of the day, interrupted only by the odd shower.

LPS compete in the Mid-Lancs league, so their results had to be extracted from the overall results.

The best individual performance came from Tom Walsh whose fine run in the U11 race brought him home in 4th place.

With support from Zac Dickinson (17) and Nathan Naylor (37) the team finished in third place.

Georgia Hurst was best placed in the U11G team, finishing in 17th place and with Amy English (20), Hannah Williamson (26) and Eve Hannaway (30), the team finished fifth. Both U13 teams finished eighth. Adam Oakley had a fine run in the boys race to finish 17th and he was well supported by James Read (34) and Connor Kingan (36) who completed the team score. The three counters for the girls were Fiona Byrne (24), Olivia Morgan (36) and Kate Sutcliffe (42).

Oliver Sutcliffe is in fine form at present and this showed in his seventh place finish in the U15B race.

Fletcher Foster excelled to come home in 19th place but Tom Corcoran could have expected a higher place finish than 22nd.

This confirmed a fifth place finish for the team.

The girls matched this position with Jenny Williamson (17), Annabelle Corlett (25) and a fine run from Hannah Doyle (29) completing the scoring. The U17 women failed to complete a team with Harriet Foley (18) and Amelia Hitchmough the sole runners.
