FROM the Beeston Review, w/e December 1 CATTLE Phenomenal entries for December, knocking on the door of 200 head at a weekly sale. It was the native breeds leading the way today, Angus x from Messrs Lloyd topping the sale at £1,240 closely followed by Mark Chesworth’s Shorthorns at £1,190, Pete Whitby deserves a mention for Friesians to £1,070 and at the younger end a superb consignmen­t of 6-8mo Lim x steers from Barbara Heyes Land Improvemen­t sold to 280p/kg. POULTRY Welsummers were the top three sellers this week with 5 Welsummer X hens selling for £9 (all prices per head) and four Welsummer bantam females £8. A pair of Serama sold for £7 as did a trio of blue laced Wyandottes. A trio of lemon Pekins came in at £6.50. Muscovy ducks sold for £6. A really beautiful pair of Jubilee Indian game £6. Christmas started this week on the poultry section with the first of the Christmas live poultry sales. PIGS Demand, as always, for good quality meat pigs, and surprising­ly good trade for leaner types of more traditiona­l breeds, led by shop customers seeking sausage ingredient­s for the forthcomin­g festive period. A large proportion of lighter weight porkers in, with few heavier baconers on offer. Christmas Pig Show and Sale, Monday, December 11. SHEEP Stronger lambs, in particular, were really sought-after, at up to £57, with sample prices as follows: Suffolk cross mixed lambs to £57, Cheviot cross mixed lambs to £54, Charollais cross mixed lambs to £52, Specklefac­e cross ram lambs to £49, Cheviot cross ram lambs to £47 FRUIT & VEG A good selection of local veg met improved demand; carrots to £2.20, parsnips to £2.50, sprouts to £5 but large entries of cabbage hard work at around £2 per box. Potatoes saw Wilja to £5.50, Monte Carlo to £4.80 and Harmony to £3.50 per bag. PRODUCE Strong entry with six loads. Good show of hay with both quads and small bales being for sale. Seven tonnes of hay in quads sold to £160 per tonne and another load sold for £40 per bale. Small baled hay to £3.80 per bale. Short on straw, but 11 tonnes of barley straw sold to £136 per tonne. Small baled straw to £4 per bale. Round baled haylage sold to £26 per bale
