FROM the Chelford Review, w/e December 15 CATTLE The day kicked off in splendid style with a pen of superb Limousin bulls from Oak Barn Livestock, aged between 7 and 11 months, the best, a son of Goldcard, made £1,000 and the younger end at £890. Messrs Hassall took top honours in fine style with Herefords to £1400 and another super run of cattle from Mr Paul Cheers sold to £1,225 with no less than 10 steers over £1,000. Two belting Friesians sold to £945 for Mr Robert Heath and £915 for Peter Whitby. POULTRY Only the most loyal of poultry supporters turned up and considering the weather it was great to see them. Cockerels were the main sellers and are always wanted at Beeston. The auction had a great ‘buzz’ about it with the sense of achieving something by just being there. Christmas live turkey sale – Turkey Hens 12-13lb £12 to 22-23lb £22 and Bronze Turkey Hens 16.5lb £23; geese fetched up to £20. PIGS Prime Pigs to 172ppk, Sows selling to 50ppk, Weaners selling to £40 per head. SHEEP Rams average £86.50 Ewes average £52.61 Tremendous demand again for all meated Ewes and Rams, to £102 for David Stewart’s strong pure Texels, with Paul Taylor’s run of Texel Crosses to £91, £90, and pure Charollais from Andrew Walton to £90, with all buyers keen for quality, meated sheep. POTATOES Wilja to £5.50, Monte Carlo £4.80; Harmony £3.50 per bag. FRUIT & VEG A good selection of local veg met improved demand; Carrots to £2.20, Parsnips to £2.50, Sprouts to £5 but large entries of Cabbage, hard work at around £2 per box. Plant sales followed by vegetables from 10.30am every Wednesday until further notice. PRODUCE Five Loads under the hammer and two loads on private sales. More buyers this week and trade good with Feed Wheat Straw in quads (10.90 Tonnes) making £134 per tonne. A 13 Tonne load of Bedding Wheat Straw realised £100 per tonne. Conventional valed hay changed hands at 3.50 per bale for a small load, and small bale Barley Straw 3.20 per bale.
