Diehard fans and board will see us sorted in future

SKELMERSDALE United boss Dave Powell praised the ambition of his club this week as he aims to pull away from the bottom end of the table moving into the New Year.

Skem are currently languishing just three points above the drop zone despite an upturn in fortunes since Powell’s arrival at the end of September, but the Blueboys supremo was quick to point out they are also trailing the mid-table cluster by only six points.

Prescot Cables’ Volair Park has been home for Skem this season after an acrimonious failure to agree a new lease at the Uretek Stadium. The Skem boss, however, believes the signs are good for him team in the long run.

“There’s some really keen long term backers of Skem, people who have been at the club for years and years and years,” Powell noted.

“There’s a good, active board who are there at all the matches and trying to get things sorted, included trying to sort out a new venue for the long term. Short term the matches are at Prescot and we’re just trying to get organised and get matches on and make sure the organisation is right.”

Brighouse Town are the visitors to Skem’s auxiliary stadia this weekend, and they can go level on points with the hosts if they produce an upset. Powell is confident but believes his players “have got to be up for it.”

“We’ve missed three games [through postponement] that we were confident for and looking forward to.

“You post a couple of wins in those games and you’re mid-table and heading in the right direction so that’s what we’re looking to do over Christmas and New Year, starting with Brighouse on Saturday.

“They’re tough. If they beat us they go level on points with us. There’s no bad teams in this league and the lads have got to be up for it.”
