Police name man killed in horror crash
THE man killed in a car crash in Ormskirk days before Christmas has been named as John Roberts.
Mr Roberts, 69, who lived in Scarisbrick, died after his BMW collided with a lorry in County Road, near the Hayfield pub.
The crash happened at about 8am on Friday, December 22, at the notorious junction of the commuter road with Hayfield Lane and Green Lane.
It was the tenth crash there in five years.
Firefighters freed Mr Roberts from his damaged car using specialist cutting equipment and small tools, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lancashire police said that the driver of the Mercedes lorry was taken to Southport hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
The road was closed for seven hours while emergency services attended the scene.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper previously called for action to be taken to make the road safer at this junction and the nearby Fiveways junction.
Speaking in October, the Labour MP said: “County Road has many junctions some with lights and some without, and we should be ensuring that the road is as safe as it can possibly be to reduce the chances of further accidents occurring.
“Government guidance might steer one way, but common sense and local knowledge needs to have influence so we are not waiting for a death on the road before action is taken.”
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to email Lancashire police at 2385@lancashire.pnn. police.uk or call 101, quoting log number 256 of December 22.
