FROM the Beeston Review, w/e January 26 CATTLE A superb entry of cattle – and what a trade! All classes of stores a pleasure to sell with no less than 21 cattle over £1,000, 14 of which topped the £1,100 mark. Leading the trade was Messrs Langley with a cracking pen of Monty steers, top call of £1,305 with others following very closely at £1,290 and £1,245. Mark Whittaker consigned another super pen of Angus x steers at £1205 and a run of younger Continentals topped at £1,175 for Ben Starkey. POULTRY A lively and busy poultry auction resulted in a total clearance. Top sellers were three young black shoulder peacocks and an Indian Blue selling for £10 (all prices per head) a pair of pure bred Emden geese £7. Cockerels, as always, sold well up to £5.50. There was a strong demand for brown hens, ex-layers up to £2. More in next week. PIGS Porkers to 166.0p/Kg, av 93.2p/kg, cutters to 149.0p/Kg, av 112.3p/Kg, baconers to 132.0p/Kg, av 105.8p/Kg, overweight pigs to 110p (117kg), 85p (120kg) etc and to £128.70.

A few more in, with a wide variation of quality, and weights. Quality pigs at the most soughtafter weights between 75 and 90 kg met a lively trade throughout. SHEEP Store lambs found several buyers, despite a shortage of feeding quality, with Zwartble ram lambs to £50, £49 etc, Texel cross mixed lambs to £48, Texel cross long-keep mixed lambs to £42, £39, £35 etc. EGGS Free range eggs to just over £1 per dozen. POTATOES £5 per bag (Valour) FRUIT & VEG Another super quality entry of locally grown vegetables fresh “from field to fork” met a sound inquiry and saw: carrots £1.50 per bag, parsnips £2, red cabbage to £3, hard cabbage to £3, leeks £2.50, sprouts £2.50. PRODUCE A good company of buyers saw feed wheat straw in quads sell to £134 per tonne for a seven tonne tractor trailer load and bedding wheat straw made £120 per tonne for another seven tonne load. round bale barley straw made £31 per bale and small baled meadow hay £2.50 per bale.
