Powell at a loss to explain defeat

- BY SAM CARROLL

SKELMERSDALE United boss Dave Powell had “no idea” how his side managed to lose to Colne on Tuesday night.

United went down 2-1 as they travelled to Holt House in trying conditions, but the manager believes his side deserved more.

“I think we’ve created twelve, fifteen gilt-edged opportunities. Our finishing could maybe have been more clinical but that’s all we’re missing.

“We created chance-after-chance and we just didn’t take them.

“We’ve got to take a portion of them and put teams away. We’ve come away from home and played really well.”

Skem recorded their second successive goalless draw prior to Tuesday’s defeat, holding Bamber Bridge at home.

Lee Callum Roberts impressed once more in the United goal, while the overturning of Liam Hollett’s dismissal from the previous weekend, received in an incident which also saw Atherton Collieries man Neil Chappell dismissed, completed a hat-trick of positives for Powell after the signing of Tom Hulme.

The striker, who notched an incredible 38 goals in 33 games for Haslingden in the West Lancashire last season, worked with Powell at Radcliffe Borough in 2015, and the Skem boss was delighted to land his man.

“I worked with Tom a few seasons ago (Radcliffe Borough) and I know what he can do for us.

“It might take some time to get up to speed with us but I thought he had a good first outing for us.

“He led the line well against two experienced defenders and had a number of chances, going forward they will result in goals as I know he can do that well.”

Powell’s side have now failed to register a victory since November but remain nine points clear of danger. The manager, though, remains upbeat.

“If we’d have equalised we’d have gone on and won the game. That’s how it is, we roll our sleeves up, train again Thursday and look forward to a trip to South Shields on Saturday.”
