Schools compete to be Last Choir Singing

-

TWO Ormskirk primary schools are competing in a county choir competition.

St Anne’s Catholic Primary School and St Michael’s Church of England Primary School are taking part in the Last Choir Singing choir competition at Westholme School’s Croston Theatre.

The first heat takes place tonight (March 1) and there will seven regional heats held around the county.

Primary schools from Preston and Chorley will be competing against the Ormskirk schools.

The competition is now in its fourth year, and has become an important diary event for junior schools in the region.

Both Ormskirk choirs are being led by James Cairns, a vocal coach, who is immensely proud of what they have achieved.

He said: “St Anne’s has a long tradition of celebrating music in the school. The choir consists of 45 children, all born performers.

“They love to go and watch other performers, such as the Philharmonic Orchestra.

“They practise really hard every Friday afternoon and will be excited to take part in the competition and see the other choirs perform.”

He is equally fond of St Michael’s choir, which is newly-formed and has 25 members.

He said: “They are very focused and are very keen to learn.

“Their enthusiasm, passion and drive shines through.

“They are looking forward very much to taking part in the Last Choir Singing.

“It will be a great experience for them.”

A performer himself, James remembers the excitement of performing as a teenager, and understands how all the choirs will be feeling on the night.

Anita Shaw, the project manager of Last Choir Singing, said: “We are delighted to have St Anne’s and St Michael’s in the competition.

“We hope it will encourage other Ormskirk schools to enter next year.”
