Powell blasts ‘worst of season’

- BY SAM CARROLL

SKELMERSDALE United lost out 2-1 at home to bottom-of-the-table Goole last weekend, leaving Dave Powell’s men sitting ominously above the relegation zone, with just three points between themselves and Saturday’s victors.

And the manager didn’t hold back in his assessment of the performance.

“To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement,” the deflated Skem boss said after the game.

“There’s a lack of discipline - in sticking to a gameplan - which is disappointing. If we’d kept doing the same things and created more and more opportunities we’d have came away easy winners, but at the other end they’ve had three chances and scored two goals.”

And Powell reckons it’s the poorest showing he’s seen during his time at the club.

“Football is a game where everybody has to do their job and I don’t think that’s happened today. I am disappointed. It’s the worst performance since I’ve arrived.

“The lads have to look at themselves and ask whether the job they’ve done is good enough for the club and team mates.”

Both sides had players dismissed Goole losing Danny South and United captain Liam Hollett seeing red late on - but goals from Scott Smith and Christopher Walton meant Josh Wardle’s strike was nothing more than a consolation.

With United now winless in 15 - losing ten of those games - they have now been pulled back into the relegation mire Powell had seemingly lifted them out of upon his arrival this season.

The manager, however, has continued to ring the changes as Skem announced a trio of new signings.

Tunde Owolabi, Ryan Botell and Billy Whittle have all joined the club, with Owolabi and Botell making instant debut’s in Saturday’s defeat.

Skem travel to Kendal Town in the Evo Stik North on Saturday.
