Isabella is a Guiding light for women in workplace

ATEENAGER from Lydiate got to experience big city life on a day aimed at getting more girls interested in careers in finance, engineerin­g, and management.

Isabella Salzano, 17, a member of Girlguidin­g North West England, travelled to London to take part in SheCanBe, a one-day event where she was teamed with a mentor from Allianz Global Investors.

Isabella spent the morning taking part in workshops illustrati­ng daily life working in the City and meeting inspiratio­nal women who have entered these industries already.

She was able to meet other young women interested in city careers, and explore ways to smash the glass ceiling in the working world.

Isabella said: “SheCanBe has empowered me to know that I have to ability to pursue any career that I want to.

“I loved that during the convention, MATTHEW Bousfield from Ainsdale is “thrilled” at being named St John Ambulance’s National Cadet of the Year for 2018.

The 17-year-old triumphed in a two-day contest, in which the best of the charity’s young volunteers from around the country took part in some tough tasks, to win the prestigiou­s title.

He will now represent St John Ambulance Cadets at a number of high profile national events over the coming year.

Matthew, who attends King George V Sixth Form College, where he is studying health and social care, said: “I am so thrilled to be awarded the National Cadet of the Year 2018 and delighted to be bringing it back to the we all made a pledge; many girls promised to be allies to women in the workplace or to encourage young girls and women in their own lives to stand up for themselves and equality.

“I pledged to be confident in myself and my own abilities and to pursue equal opportunit­ies further.”

The event was organised by Girlguidin­g in conjunctio­n with the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

Just 19.5% of top City roles are held by women, according to research from the Financial Times.

Isabella said: “Girlguidin­g has created so many opportunit­ies for young women including myself which might not be available to them otherwise.

“Events such as the She Can Be campaign reinforce Girlguidin­g’s beliefs about equal opportunit­ies and empower us to know that our ambitions are not limited by our gender.” North! The award was given in associatio­n with the National Federation of Fishmonger­s after an assessment lasting almost two hours.

The competitio­n was held at Eastwood Hall in Nottingham and was complete his silver training at Billingsga­te fish market in London.

He has since completed gold training with an expert fishmonger and trainer during a residentia­l course at Grimsby Seafood Village.

He said: “I am so pleased that all the hard work has paid off! I feel honoured to be given this award.” designed to stretch the cadets’ abilities, it covered a wide range of subjects such as communicat­ion, team work, presentati­on, and social skills. ORMSKIRK West End Primary School has been congratula­ted by the minister for school standards, for being in the top 1% of England primary schools.

This was for achieving 100% of pupils reaching or exceeding in the expected standards for reading at the end of key stage 2 (results published December 2017).

Head teacher Phil Clarke said that he was delighted to receive a letter from Nick Gibb MP to congratula­te him, staff and pupils of the school.

Mr Clarke said the letter also thanked the staff for their hard work and profession­alism in producing such high standards.

Mr Gibb wrote: “We all want to ensure that every child has the necessary fluency in reading to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond.

“Ormskirk West End has provided this to all its pupils.”

Mr Clarke added: “The school is growing and going from strength to strength, our only aim has always been to provide children with the highest possible standard of education in a happy and safe environmen­t.”
