AFORMER Edge Hill student has been announced as the winner of a prestigious Royal Television Society award. Peter Miller, who studied animation at the Ormskirk-based university, was given the North West Student Award for Animation.

This was presented at a ceremony on Monday, March 12 at Salford’s Lowry Theatre, in acknowledgement of his film Peregrine The Pathetic.

Peter said: “It feels surreal to know that my film is being recognised by a society as renowned as the RTS.

“All the hard work really has paid off. The film took me a whole year to complete, which included writing the screenplay over the summer.

“My career goal is to work in film or television, and maybe even set up my own production company.”

Peter was one of three students from Edge Hill to be shortlisted at this year’s awards ceremony.

The other students’ work shortlisted was Nueva Vida by Yotam Berant, Aidan Alexander, George Rough, Harry Holiday and Isabella Castaneda in the TV factual category and Pegs by Laura Stokes, Anna Dye, Alisha Gibbons, Hannah Rzepkowski, Charlee Mackey and Ellie Carroll in the TV Short Feature category.

As Peter was named winner of the award, his film will now be entered into the national RTS Student Awards, with the winner set to be announced later this year.

On accepting his award, Peter, who graduated in 2017, said: “I must give my thanks to the tutors and students at Edge Hill for making me feel so welcome, and also my cowriter, Thomas Richard.’’

He added: ‘‘Peregrine The Pathetic was a way of me wanting to tell a good story and something for me to be proud of. It feels great to be following in the footsteps of many talented animators and storytellers, past and present.”

Peter’s tutor and senior lecturer in multimedia at Edge Hill University, Alex Jukes, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Peter has been awarded the Regional RTS Award for best animation.

“This is a real testament to the hard work that he has put into creating the film and to his unique creative outlook. We had every confidence that he would win.”
